Happy August, spearos + spearas!

We hope you’ve all been enjoying an incredible spearfishing season so far August is the perfect time to make the most of the warmer waters and abundant marine life. Get out there and enjoy the hunt while you can, as some forecasts are predicting less-than-ideal weather on the horizon.

We’ve got some fantastic gear and ideas lined up for you this month – plus, check out our guide on ‘How to fin’ below. Your fins are your motor, and correct technique prevents cramping, and maximises the effectiveness of long fins. Are you ‘finning’ correctly?

As always, if you have any gear questions at all or you’d just like some personalised advice without any obligation, our friendly shop team are only too happy to help – call 01726 213290, email enquiries@spearfishing.co.uk or chat to us on Messenger (see icon bottom right of this screen).

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Summer holidays, kids bored & nothing to do?

Scallops

When the kids are climbing the walls, take them foraging. It’s a great free activity with minimum equipment required that works whether the weather is belting sunshine or even a bit drizzly. Starting on the shore and progressing to the shallows, it’s also a great route into spearfishing for newbies.

Neale was wearing his Pathos Smoothskin jacket for extra warmth on top of his Moray Weedline Long John Trousers. The Smoothskin is ideal for boat diving and colder conditions as it removes the windchill and adds extra stretch to the suit as its not hindered by the nylon layer on the outside.

Octacle Ocean-friendly lube

We stock the most sustainable and eco friendly wetsuit lubrication on the market.

Octacle is made from sustainably grown seaweed, with a hint of Aloe Vera to moisturise the skin, and thatโ€™s it! While some of you will still be using regular bathroom products, these are super-harmful to our ocean.

Seaweed is fast growing, requires no fertilizers or watering – it’s a natural ocean filter and is the biggest carbon sequester and oxygen creator on the planet.

Up to 90% of photosynthetic life is in our ocean! We need to look after it. Octacle is the best choice. It is super cost-effective too, with one 70g tin making approx 14 litres (if mixed as directed).

ยฃ20.99/70g tin or upgrade your tin to DOUBLE the size for just ยฃ13.93 extra.

NOW WE CAN REFILL IN STORE FOR YOU! A 10g refill is just ยฃ1.99 when refilling branded Octacle tins (makes approx 2 litres)

๐Ÿซง How’s your finning game? ๐Ÿซง

DiveR fins

Your fins are your motor, and correct technique prevents cramping, and maximises the effectiveness of long fins. Spearfishers use long fins because (if used correctly), they are more powerful and efficient than shorter fins, or Scuba diving fins. Check out the full article here.

Once you’ve read our finning guide, you’ll appreciate the value of these body-board style floats. With these, you put your upper body on the float and your legs fin behind it. Not only does the use of a float reduce the surface resistance and make your job easier, but being up on the float angles your legs more easily under the water, which means your fins produce more power rather than flapping about on the surface.

“”With these you can get your bodyweight out the water and skim along the surface much easier. You can also carry extra gear and safety bits on them too like your phone, GPS, an extra gun, spare snorkel etc etc. A true game changer, you will never go back to a normal float again!” ~ Chris
