Please only use a reel if you have some experience in spearfishing and know this is the route you would like to take.

We generally advise the use of floats and float lines over the use of reels for safety.

We do understand that reels will mean less drag, less pull of the swell and you wont need to worry about a float line catching around rocks. In some uses, such as heavy currents, a reel is a safer option as no floatline will catch on any rocks.

However, floats are ideal to warn boat traffic, and if your spear or gun ever gets snagged on the bottom, you can always leave it to come to the surface and breath. Being able to follow your floatline back to the gun will mean that you can safely unlodge your gun with however many attempts needed.

In general use, a reel means that you’ll only ever have one hand free unless you let go. Once you let go, a speargun can be pretty hard to find if you take your eyes off it, especially compared to a bright big orange floaty device.

If things go right, but you need to release the reel, you’ll then have 20m+ of thin dyneema line to contend with, to load it back on can take some time and can take you away from valuable fishing time.

If things go wrong, which is exceptionally rare, but sometimes reels can jam. If it jams at 10m, and youre in 2m of visibility, you know that finding your precious gun will be unlikely. Subconsciously, you could push yourself beyond your limits to retrieve your speargun and risk a blackout.
