Getting into snorkeling is simple with a low cost of entry – just a few bits of  snorkeling gear will keep you safe and warm on your adventures in the sea.

Snorkels

Snorkels are of course crucial for breathing while snorkeling, allowing you to comfortably skim the water’s surface! A good snorkel should not only help you breathe easily, but it should also reduce drag. Some have helpful features, for example:

• Drain Valve: Allows water to drain out of the snorkel.
• Comfortable Mouthpiece: Ensures a snug fit without your jaw getting tired.

Snorkeling Masks

A well-fitting snorkel mask is going to give you a much nicer day out. It will help with clear vision and comfort while scouting for interesting things underwater. Important features to look for include:

• Proper Fit: A mask with a silicone skirt creates a watertight seal and prevents leaks or fogging.
• Defogging Capabilities: Choosing a mask with anti-fog treatments or built-in defogging features keep your vision clear. You can also buy anti fog spray which is very popular!
• Wide Skirt: A wide skirt provides a better seal with your skin.

Snorkeling Fins

Having the right fins for the job is crucial to be able to move efficiently while in the water, so your legs don’t get tired. Here are some tips for selecting fins:

• Blade Length: Medium-length blades are ideal for snorkeling, sufficiently propelling you forward without tiring you out.
• Flexibility: Fins with flexible yet powerful blades help you move efficiently, again without tiring your legs.
• Snug Fit: Fins that fit properly are less likely to fall off or give you blisters.
• Dive Socks: Wearing dive socks can give you a better fit, keep your feet warm and help  the fins to feel more comfy. If you’re just doing a little snorkelling around you might not bother with these, but for anything longer, they’ll give you a comfier day.

Snorkeling Wear and Clothing

Comfortable and durable clothing is essential for snorkeling. Options include wetsuits to keep you warm in the water (5mm is usually a good choice for the UK), rash guard, dive socks, and more. Rash guards are handy for protection against sun and abrasions.

Float

A float is essential to warn other water users that you’re there. You’re not going to be very visible with your head in the water snorkelling around, especially to boats.  Floats come in nice bright colours, some with flags,  to help you stand out more. They’re also great for having a little rest while you’re out swimming.
