    Swimming gear guide

Both sea swimming and wild swimming have become popular activities for everyone, with more swimmers than ever before diving into open water and coastal spots every day.

The beauty of this activity is surely in its simplicity – you can just pack your swimwear and a towel, and you’re good to go. However, there are many additional products on offer that can give you a better experience in the water, including essential safety equipment and accessories to keep you warm. In our range, there’s plenty to choose from to make your swims more enjoyable.

We’ve compiled this guide to help you get started with sea swimming and help keep you safe and warm. Remember, with the right equipment you can stay in the water for longer and have a more comfortable experience.

    Know your limits

As with any activity, it’s crucial to understand your limits and listen to your body. When starting sea swimming, always swim with others, be aware of your surroundings, and prioritise safety.

Swimsuits and wetsuits: which to choose

For most, a swimsuit is the basic requirement for a quick dip in the water during warmer months and these are of course available in various styles, including long sleeves for extra coverage. However, in UK waters, you won’t last long in the sea without some extra warmth.

Neoprene layers such as wetsuit jackets, trousers or full suits not only keep you warm but offer the benefits of buoyancy, improving your body position in the water and giving you more stability. Your hips and legs are elevated, giving you a more horizontal orientation in the water which reduces drag and resistance: allowing you to move efficiently with more momentum.

Some swimmers prefer not to go too thick with the layers (more thickness = more buoyancy) so that they maintain a closer connection to the water and rely on their own technique and muscle engagement.

    Neoprene accessories

Staying warm in cold water can make a significant difference in your motivation and safety. Here are some essential neoprene accessories:

    Neoprene Gloves

Choose gloves based on water temperature – thicker gloves offer more warmth but less dexterity (although there’s not a huge difference between 3mm and 5mm). Top brands provide gloves that balance warmth and flexibility well.

    Neoprene Footwear

Neoprene socks are best for swimming flexibility. Having warm feet will help you stay in the water for longer and provide some protection too.

    Neoprene Headwear

Neoprene hoods provide additional warmth and protection.

    Goggles

Anti-fog goggles are essential for swimming with your head in the water. Options range from low light to polarised and photochromatic goggles, with cases available to keep them safe.

    Ear Plugs

Protect against Surfer’s Ear with ear plugs that keep water out but allow sound in. Options like SurfEars offer excellent protection and comfort.

    Tow Float

A tow float like those we offer from Salvimar enhances visibility and safety in shared water spaces. They come in various designs, some with dry bags to keep your belongings close to you but also dry whilst swimming.

    Hooded Poncho Towel

A hooded poncho towel helps you change modestly and stay warm. Available in cotton for comfort or microfibre for quick drying, they come in various colours and sizes.

    Dry Bag

Keep your gear dry and organised with a dry bag. Available in various sizes, they are essential for transporting your equipment.
